IRELAND – District Heating, Hot Water & Electricity System

This installation is a standard commercial renewable electricity and hot water system.

This installation is a custom designed district scheme for a holiday village. The HONE system provides energy to the district heating system, the district hot water system and provides electricity to the site. All energy is produced from free daylight.

The village district heating system was originally set up with two large heat pumps and these were removed in favour of a large oil boiler. In the winter of 2017/2018, this project was upgraded with a HONE district energy system finally collapsing the energy and emissions costs of the village.

The system installed is a custom commercial HONE district heating, district hot water and village electricity system.  As with all HONE systems, it was designed completely based on the input site survey and to integrate with the existing systems. All the buildings heating and hot water systems were also converted to smartphone control for the district scheme manager. Like all HONE systems, it can be done without any interruptions to guests or hot water services.

The motivation was firstly that this project was established with best practice for the environment. The district scheme heating and hot water which are separate district supply pipes were heated by two large 3 phase ground heat pumps which did the task but the village removed due to the level of electricity bills. A large oil boiler replaced the heat pumps until an alternative could be found. After research, HONE was chosen and has been a huge success in collapsing the energy bills.

The village has peak occupancy of 70 people approximately.

The biggest challenge was the removal of a significant amount of legacy infrastructure in the plant room belonging to the heat pumps. The HONE installation has only small infrastructure requirement as most of the investment goes on the energy generation part of a HONE system.

This system was installed early 2018. The customer reports that the village had been filling the oil tank at a peak of once every 3 weeks, and that from the HONE system install date in Feb 2018., that no oil had been purchased since (July 2018). (5 months).
